Current Research: I am most interested in the viability (implementation and broad satisfaction) of deliberative democratic theory as an alternative governance reform, especially as a response to complex and contentious U.S. policy issues in instrumental pluralist settings. I recently presented a paper entitled "Evaluating Grand Claims in Oregon Health Care Reform via the Health Services Commission: Deliberative Democracy or 'Normal Politics'?" This paper was an evaluative case study of Oregon health care reform along deliberative criteria, beginning with innovation in late 1980s and subsequent lack of diffusion. I am currently working on my dissertation, which is entitled, "The Role of Policy Environment in Deliberative Democracy."
