Scholarships


The Department of Political Science offers the following awards and scholarships. Selection of recipients is the responsibility of the Political Science department head in consultation with the department’s Admissions and Awards or Curriculum Committees. The committee reserves the right to withhold any scholarship.

The 2008/09 application deadline is May 1, 2008. To apply, provide all required materials to The Department of Political Science; Prince Lucien Campbell Hall, 936 PLC; University of Oregon; Eugene, OR 97403.

Philo Sherman Bennett Prizes The department Curriculum Committee awards the Bennett Prize to the writer of an exemplary Political Science honors thesis. $500 No application is necessary
Neil D. Blackman Memorial Scholarship This scholarship is awarded to a financially, academically and intellectually deserving student to pursue studies in the humanities or political philosophy relevant to human rights, the responsibilities of individuals to democratic institutions, and public service. The student must demonstrate a broad historic perspective and the courage to practice his or her beliefs. $2000

Submit a letter of application that explains how the applicant meets the criteria of the award. Include name, UO ID, mailing and email addresses, and a copy of UO and other relevant college transcripts. May 1, 2008, deadline.

Alanson H. Kleinsorge Political Science Scholarship Student must: have a cumulative high school GPA no better than 3.3; be either a freshman or sophomore majoring in Political Science (freshmen and transfer students must have at least two terms at UO); have filed a FAFSA and be eligible for financial aid. $1000 This scholarship is not offered in 2008/09.
Michael & Libby McCaslin Scholarship This scholarship is awarded to outstanding junior or senior undergraduate students majoring in Political Science. $1000 Candidates will be evaluated on the overall quality of their academic work, commitment to learning, and the potential for further academic achievement. Submit a letter application addressing these criteria along with a letter of recommendation from one faculty member and an unofficial transcript. May 1, 2008 deadline.
Research and Travel Awards A limited amount of research support is available to support Political Science majors who wish to travel to a professional conference or who anticipate extraordinary research costs. Up to $100 per student Provide a letter of application stating the proposed activity. Indicate the expected expenditures. Departmental approval required prior to expenditures. Applications accepted throughout the year.
