Scholarships


The Department of Political Science offers the following awards and scholarships. Selection of recipients is the responsibility of the Political Science department head in consultation with the department Honors and Awards Committee. The department reserves the right to withhold any scholarship.

The 2013-2014 scholarship application deadline is April 1, 2013.

Scholarship Criteria Application Procedure
Neil D. Blackman Memorial Scholarship This scholarship is awarded to a financially, academically and intellectually deserving student to pursue studies in the humanities or political philosophy relevant to human rights, the responsibilities of individuals to democratic institutions, and public service.  The student must demonstrate a broad historic perspective and the courage to practice his or her beliefs. One $2,000 scholarship.

A complete application includes:
• Political Science scholarship application form.
• Personal letter of application that explains how you meet the criteria of the award.
• A copy of UO and other relevant college transcripts.

Alanson H. Kleinsorge Political Science Scholarship This scholarship is to assist a political science major who shows promise of blossoming into a good or even a great student.  Open to freshman applicants for their sophomore year.  Requires a minimum GPA of 3.0 after the fall and winter terms of the freshman year. A complete application includes:
• Political Science scholarship application form.
• Personal letter of application that discusses your academic challenges in your first terms at the UO, what you have learned, where you hope to go from here, how you plan to succeed.
• Letter of recommendation from a faculty member from a fall or winter class. The recommendation letter must address how the student is making an effort to demonstrate ability to meet class expectations, and how the student is working to improve grades. Consultation with a GTF might be necessary.
• Unofficial UO transcript.
Michael & Libby McCaslin Scholarship This scholarship will be awarded to an outstanding undergraduate student majoring in Political Science who will be either a junior or senior during the 2011-12 academic year. Candidates will be evaluated on the overall quality of their academic work, commitment to learning, and the potential for further academic achievement. One $1,000 scholarship. 

A complete application includes:
• Political Science scholarship application form.
• Personal letter of application addressing scholarship criteria.
• Letter of recommendation from one faculty member.
• Unofficial UO transcript.

 

Awards

Philo Sherman Bennett Prize The department Curriculum Committee awards the Bennett Prize to the writer of an exemplary Political Science honors thesis. $500 No application is necessary.
Research and Travel Awards A limited amount of research support is available to support undergraduate Political Science majors who wish to travel to a professional conference or who anticipate extraordinary research costs. Up to $100 per student Provide a letter of application stating the proposed activity. Indicate the expected expenditures. Departmental approval required prior to expenditures. Applications accepted throughout the year.
