PS 406: Field Studies

Field Study courses are offered for students who wish to obtain department credit for internships and field work done outside of the department. The length of each course may vary from a term to year, however, a maximum of 10 PS 406 credits may be applied towards the major requirements. To be eligible, students must be:

  1. A Political Science major
  2. Have achieved junior year status or have completed six courses in Political Science, including PS 201.
  3. Earned a cumulative GPA and department GPA of at least 3.00.
  4. Meet with the Supervising Instructor to obtain approval for registration.

For more information, see the Field Studies/Internship Guidelines. Like PS 401 and PS 405 courses, Field Studies courses require a signed approval/contract form. The Proposal/Approval form can be downloaded or picked up from the Political Science office, 936 PLC. Remember to register for PS 406 using Duck Web after you've submitted your form.

Students are responsible for coordinating with the Supervising Instructor to ensure that all requirements are met to obtain credit.

Legislative Internships

Legislative Internships are subject to slightly different grading procedures than the regular PS 406 Field Studies course. Pay particular attention to the paragraph dealing with Legislative Internships at the bottom of the
Field Studies/Internship Guidelines publication.

PS 406 Legislative Internships must be set up by the student through the State Capitol and the Political Science office. Information on how this is accomplished with the State Capitol is available at the State Legislature's website.

A copy of the Capitol's Legislative Internship form is available at: http://www.leg.state.or.us/capinfo/regist.pdf

Setting up the Political Science departmental component is the same as setting up a regular PS 406. Please refer to the above information regarding PS 406 Field Studies.

Summer Field Study papers will be due on Friday of the 10th week (same as other terms).

OINT 488: Global Internships/IE3

The Oregon University System offers IE3 Global Internships (International Education, Experience, Employment). Interns can earn PS credits. For more information, see the Political Science IE3 Internship Guidelines. Like PS 406, global internships require a signed approval/contract form. The IE3 Internship Contract can be downloaded or picked up from the Political Science office, 936 PLC. Refer to the IE3 website or UO Study Abroad Programs for more information.

Other Current Internship Opportunities

The Political Science Peer Advisers and the UO Career Center are good sources for information about internships. In addition, the Political Science department offers a partial list of internships and other opportunities on the Postings for Majors webpage.

Questions regarding the Political Science Field Studies program may be directed to Priscilla Yamin, the 2009-10 coordinator.
