Scholarships

The Department of Political Science offers three scholarships to UO students. Review details below to learn more about each award’s criteria and eligibility. Eligible students are encouraged to apply, regardless of citizenship and/or FAFSA eligibility.


Neil D. Blackman Memorial Scholarship

Eligible: 2018-2019 Sophomore, Junior, Senior or Graduate Student of any major (i.e. current UO Freshman, Sophomores and Juniors).

Award: One $2,000 scholarship

Criteria: This scholarship is awarded to a financially, academically and intellectually deserving student to pursue studies in the humanities or political philosophy relevant to human rights, the responsibilities of individuals to democratic institutions, and public service. The student must demonstrate a broad historic perspective and the courage to practice his or her beliefs.

Application Procedure – A complete application includes:

  • Submission of the scholarship application (below)
  • Personal letter of application that explains how you meet the criteria of the award.
  • Unofficial UO transcript (other relevant college transcripts may also be submitted for review).

Alanson H. Kleinsorge Political Science Scholarship

Eligible: 2018-2019 Junior or Senior Political Science majors (i.e. current UO Sophomores and Juniors) who are eligible for financial aid*, as determined by the University.

Award: One $4,000 scholarship

Criteria: This scholarship is to support individuals with weak academic backgrounds who have begun to show promise that they will blossom into good, perhaps even great students. The recipient will demonstrate that they have made significant sustained improvements in their academic performance after difficulties at some point in their career (high school or college).

Application Procedure – A complete application includes:

  • Submission of the scholarship application (below)
  • Personal letter of application that discusses your academic challenges, what you have learned, where you hope to go from here, and how you plan to succeed.
  • Letter of recommendation from a UO faculty member that addresses how the student is making an effort to demonstrate their ability to meet class expectations, improve grades, and is on a trajectory to being a great student.
    • Use a Reference Request Form to facilitate obtaining your letter of recommendation.
    • We recommend that requests for letters are submitted to faculty at least two weeks in advance of the application deadline.
    • Letters of recommendation should be submitted in PLC 936 or emailed to polisci@uoregon.edu.
  • Unofficial UO Transcript (other relevant transcripts may also be submitted for review)

Michael & Libby McCaslin Scholarship

Eligible: 2018-2019 Junior or Senior majoring in Political Science (i.e. current UO Sophomores and Juniors).

Award: One $1,500 scholarship

Criteria: This scholarship is awarded to provide support to an outstanding junior or senior undergraduate applicant. Candidates will be evaluated on the overall quality of their academic work, commitment to learning, and the potential for further academic achievement.

 Application Procedure – A complete application includes:

  • Submission of the scholarship application (below)
  • Personal letter of application addressing scholarship criteria.
  • Letter of recommendation from a UO faculty member addressing the overall quality of the student’s academic work, commitment to learning, and the potential for further academic achievement.
    • Use a Reference Request Form to facilitate obtaining your letter of recommendation.
    • We recommend that requests for letters are submitted to faculty at least two weeks in advance of the application deadline.
    • Letters of recommendation should be submitted in PLC 936 or emailed to polisci@uoregon.edu.
  • Unofficial UO transcript

Applications and all required materials must be submitted by Friday, April 20, 2018.

Submit letters of recommendation to the department office in PLC 936 or by email to polisci@uoregon.edu.

Awardees must attend the University of Oregon AND register for credits in Fall term of the year the scholarship is to be received. Incomplete or late applications will not be reviewed.


Application submissions are closed – check back in early Winter 2019 for information about next year’s scholarships!


Selection of award recipients are made by the Department Head in consultation with the department’s Honors and Awards Committee. Scholarships are awarded to current UO students; the department reserves the right to withhold any scholarship.
