Karrie Koesel's research agenda focuses on comparative politics, specializing in contemporary Chinese and Russian politics.

Her research explores questions of regime durability and regime transitions, the political economy of authoritarian and democratic states, civil society, and political culture. Her current project examines the political consequence of growing religiosity in China and Russia. Koesel teaches courses on Chinese politics, comparative authoritarianism, and religion and international politics.
